Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will support 40W fast wired charging and 20W MagSafe charging, claims a rumor currently circulating in China.
Right now, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models are capable of maximum charging speeds of up to 27W with a compatible USB-C power adapter, while official MagSafe chargers from Apple and authorized third parties can charge wireless iPhone 15 models up to 15W. All four iPhone 15 models can charge up to 50% in about 30 minutes with a 20W or higher power adapter, which is the same as the previous iPhone 13 models and Apple’s iPhone 14.
According to In homethis is set to change for the Pro models in Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 lineup, with an increase in 40W wired and 20W wireless charging to “balance and improve the problem of increased charging times caused by increased battery capacity”.
This reasoning ties in with another rumor that – with the exception of the iPhone 16 Plus – the models in Apple’s iPhone 16 series will have larger batteries than their predecessors.
The claim of increased charging power revives a similar rumor we covered here MacRumors almost a year ago, when it was reported that the iPhone 16 line would adopt stacked battery technology, along with 40W wired charging and 20W charging via MagSafe. Stacked batteries can result in higher capacity and longer life.
It’s unclear why the rumor is circulating again in Asia, but considering we’re only two months away from Apple unveiling its new flagship devices, there might be something to it. The iPhone 16 series is expected to be released sometime around mid-September.
