The 5 best coffee deals
Breville’s Barista Express has been our top espresso machine recommendation for newcomers for years. It’s reliable – the unit I bought in 2018 still works perfectly today – easy to own and feature rich. Pour the freshly roasted coffee beans into the outlet and adjust the grind settings. Pull the magnetic tamper and gently press it onto your portafilter. Insert the portafilter and press a button—now you’ve made espresso (as long as your gauge says the pressure was in the “espresso range.” Use the steam wand to steam milk if you want a latte. We’ve seen it go down at this deal price several times, but has rarely fallen below that in recent years.
Do you tend to drink a lot of lattes? You may prefer an automatic machine – press a button and it will mix the milk into your coffee for a delicious cup without any effort on your part. Cafe Barista is our top budget recommendation in our Best Latte and Cappuccino Machines guide, and that price makes it a steal. It’s plastic and lightweight (hence the price), so you’ll want to hold it with one hand as you twist the portafilter into place. It can make good espresso and then you can press a button to make a latte or cappuccino, provided you have filled the built-in milk jug. Just make sure you keep the container in the fridge when you’re done and clean it often.
Freshly roasted beans are very important in the coffee making process; this is why we recommend buying whole beans rather than ground beans. This means you’ll need a coffee grinder if your espresso machine doesn’t have one, and the Oxo Grinder is a great option with a scale if you really want to get into the weeds to make the perfect cup. A scale really helps you achieve consistency. Set your grind size, select your preferred weight and press start. It will automatically turn off when finished. It has 38 grind settings, meaning you can grind your beans fine for espresso or coarse for French press.
KitchenAid’s new semi-automatic espresso machine (8/10, WIRED recommends) has a built-in grinder that’s remarkably quiet in its operation—so much so that it carries a Quiet Mark certification. The next best trick? It is quite compact! If counter space is at a premium in your kitchen, this espresso machine has a small footprint with wheels on its base, so you can roll it out of the way. Find it! There’s also plenty of space between the portafilter and the base, so you’ll have no problem fitting taller mugs. The only issue? It may take a few tries to get the grind dose just right, but once you nail it, you’ll be drinking happily.
It’s old, but as the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Oxo’s cold brew brewer (8/10, WIRED Recommends) makes delicious, low-acid coffee with a system that seems a little intimidating at first, but is easy to master. it BEN take up more space than other cold brew systems, but you can pack it all in half. You can use paper or metal filters, and since it’s a 32-ounce brewer, you won’t be making a single cup at a time. The carafe it comes with is labeled with all the necessary measurements if you need them.
The original AeroPress was as close to a perfect coffee maker as you could get—a palm-sized take-anywhere syringe that makes delicious coffee easily and is easy to clean, too. The AeroPress XL is more of the same, literally. It’s the same device, just twice the size of everything – piston, chamber, lid, filter and mixer, and it also comes with a carafe. Admittedly, we’re not exactly sure who the AeroPress XL is for. There are probably easier ways to make twice as much coffee, and pouring half a liter of boiling water into a chamber balanced on top of a cage seems like it could end badly. However, if you’ve been waiting forever for an upgrade to your original AeroPress and drink twice as much coffee as you used to, 43 percent off seems like a steal.
