During the sale, you’ll find significant discounts on a wide range of products, from electronics and home appliances to household essentials. Prime Day spans multiple days and has been known for flash sales, limited-time offers, and special promotions.
Some of the sales and deals on offer include:
- Lightning Deals: These flash and you’ll miss it deals are available while the item is sold.
- Featured offers: These offers are usually for in-demand products and last for a longer period.
- Exclusive launches: New products often launch on Prime Day, with Prime members getting priority access.
- Offer by invitation only: These first-day offers require you to request an invitation ahead of time; not all Prime buyers will receive invitations. Amazon has announced that you can save up to 40% off Sony Wireless Headphones, 30% off the Peloton Original Bike+, up to 60% off a Citizen Chronograph Watch, and 40% off the Speedo Champion Signature Swim Pack — all as an invitation-only offer.

The dates for Prime Day 2024 have been officially announced, with the event scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 16 and Wednesday, July 17, 2024. This falls in line with past years, as Amazon’s Prime Day has historically occurred on second week of July.
When was Amazon’s first Prime Day?
Amazon’s first Prime Day sale was held on July 15, 2015. It was created to celebrate Amazon’s 20th anniversary and was marketed as a “one-day-only event packed with more deals than Black Friday, exclusively for members of Prime around the globe”.
The event was so successful that Amazon chose to make Prime Day an annual occurrence. Since then, the shopping spree has expanded to include new categories and parties, including free concerts.
What happens on Prime Minister’s Day?
On Amazon Prime Day, you can shop a wide variety of deals and discounts by going to Amazon and checking out the deals page. Many of these offers will go live at midnight. Some of those deals will sell out before the next morning, so this is a sales event worth staying up for.

Why does Prime Minister’s Day last for two days?
Prime Day was conceived as a one-day holiday, but Amazon has since expanded it to two days. This gives Amazon the opportunity to sell more items and offer additional deals and discounts to anyone who browses. More time means customers also have a longer window to browse, all of which helps increase sales.
Two days also means that customers around the world and in different time zones can participate, while Amazon has more time to fulfill orders and release other items for sale. Since competitors have started offering multi-day sales on the same day as Prime Day, Amazon has the opportunity to match what others do with a similar duration. (Walmart will often price match Amazon during the event and vice versa.)
Are the Prime Day deals the same for both days?
During Prime Day 2024, offer availability will vary. Some offers will be available for both days, while others will be short-lived or exclusive to one of the two days. It’s best to keep checking back to see what deals are ready when you’re ready to buy, but if you see something you want, it’s best to grab it before it’s gone. Some of the best deals will sell out in minutes.
Are Prime Day deals only accessible to Amazon Prime members?
Yes, Prime Day deals are exclusively for Amazon Prime members. The sale helps Amazon attract new subscribers and reward existing ones at the same time. Prime Day is promoted as part of a Prime membership, along with faster shipping, streaming media and more. Prime members also receive exclusive discounts.
If you intend to purchase the sale, make sure you have a Prime membership. If you don’t have a Prime membership, Amazon is currently offering a limited deal. For now, you can get 3 months of Prime for only $7.50 per month. (Note that some shoppers are seeing a different introductory offer.)
After that, Prime membership costs $15 per month or $139 per year. There are also discounts available for students and recipients of qualifying government assistance programs (SNAP, Medicaid).
