With the return of the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Display to the Hudson River for the first time in more than a decade, there will be significant traffic changes that the West Side of Manhattan and parts of New Jersey have not dealt with in several long ago.
On the west side of the river, Hudson County posted a helpful interactive map that shows when roads along and near the Hudson will be closed. It also marks the locations of the firework barges. Click here to view the interactive map.
Here’s a rundown of what to watch out for in Manhattan, parts of Brooklyn and the New Jersey spots along the water where crowds are sure to gather: Hoboken, Weehawken and Jersey City.
New York City
In Manhattan, many West Side streets face police closures. The following closures begin at 3:00 PM on Thursday:
Road closures
- West Side Expressway Southbound lanes – From 79th St Exit to W Houston St
- West Side Highway/West St. Northbound Lanes – From Canal St to 47th St
- The road west from Washington St
- From St. Spring to 14 St
- Westbound lanes from 10th Ave
- From St. 14 to 22 St
General Public Access Points include:
- Christopher Street at Washington Street
- West 11th Street at Washington Street
- West 12th Street at Washington Street
- West 29th Street at 11th Avenue
- West 40th Street at 11th Avenue
Streets closed to pedestrians:
- Washington Street from West Houston Street to West 14th Street
- 10th Avenue between West 14th Street and 24th Street
- 11th Avenue, between West 22nd Street and West 46th Street
- West Street between West Houston Street and West 46th Street

NYPD
Elsewhere in the city, there will be road closures for the Coney Island fireworks display at night as well. Police said the area from the sidewalk to Surf Avenue between West 10th Street and West 21st Street will be closed.
Earlier in the day, there will also be road closures for Nathan’s Famous 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest — even though Joey Chestnut won’t be competing this year. These routes include:
- Stillwell Avenue between Surf Avenue and Bowery Street
- Bowery Street between Stillwell Avenue and West 15th Street
- Surf Avenue between West 15th Street and West 12th Street
- West 15th Street between Surf Avenue and Bowery Street
Hoboken
With fireworks set to explode on the water between West 14th Street and West 34th Street in Manhattan, many will head across the Hudson to New Jersey to get a close-up view — and Hoboken may have the closest view. there is.
As a result, the city announced multiple road closures that will be in effect all day on July 4. Starting at midnight, Sinatra Drive will be closed from Fourth Street to 11th Street.
Then at 2pm, more roads are set to close:
- Hudson Place from River Street to Warrington Plaza
- Sinatra Drive from Newark Street to Fourth Street and 11th Street to 15th Street
- Sinatra Drive North from Sinatra Drive to 14th Street and through Yard Lane (Garage/Resident Access Only)
- Newark Street from River Street to Sinatra Drive
- First Street from River Street to Sinatra Drive (Garage/Residential Access Only)
- 2nd Street from River Street to Sinatra Drive (Garage/Resident Access Only)
- Third Street from River Street to Sinatra Drive (Garage/Resident Access Only)
- Fifth Street from Hudson Street to Sinatra Drive
As it approaches the time for the fireworks (after 9:00 p.m.), the final road closures will come into effect:
- Third Street from Garden Street to Washington Street
- 16th Street from Willow Avenue to Park Avenue
- Court Street from Second Street to Fourth Street
There will also be parking restrictions in place, with some starting at 11pm on Wednesday and most returning to normal at 11pm on Thursday. Here’s a look at parking restrictions, by city:

- South side of Fourth Street from River Street to Willow Avenue
- Fifth Street (both sides) from Hudson Street to Sinatra Drive
- North side of 14th Street from Sinatra Drive to Park Avenue
Weehawken
Mayor Richard Turner said roads in the city could be closed as early as 4pm depending on traffic and pedestrians. Even those who live on a closed street may not have guaranteed access.
In particular, the closures will affect the following routes:
- East JFK Boulevard
- Hamilton Ave
- Port Imperial Boulevard
- Water terrace
There will be no parking on the cliff side of East JFK Boulevard, while only vehicles with Resident Parking Authority stickers will be allowed to park on the other side. No parking will be permitted on Hamilton Avenue.
In addition to road closures, all Weehawken parks and the pool complex will close at 2 p.m.
Jersey City
Much of downtown Jersey City and a section of Newport will have road closures in effect for the Fourth of July holiday. Here’s a breakdown”
