A Dollar General customer (@sergeant_goofy) expresses concern about the lack of intelligence of young workers in a TikTok video after his cashier outsmarted him.
In the TikTok from last week, the customer says he went to Dollar General to buy a can of Tobacco Dip. He says he decided to wander the store’s isles and saw a six-pack of Mountain Dew for sale.
“It was four for $12,” he says. “You know what, I need some soda.”
He says he took four packages to the counter.
“The young man is scanning my stuff,” he continues. “I only heard three scans. And I said, ‘Oh, you missed one.'”
He says the cashier told him his total was about $24, despite the tip being only about $6.
“I said, ‘OK, I still think this is wrong, but whatever,'” the client says. “So I pay and go to my truck. I look at the bill because I’m like, ‘I know I’m not that crazy now.'”
The cashier had charged her for an extra pack of Mountain Dew. When the client told him he missed a scan, he actually hadn’t.
At first, the customer says, he didn’t want to make a fuss over $5, but in the end he decided to go back inside Dollar General.
“No, that’s the principle,” he says.
He says he grabbed another package of Mountain Dew off the store shelves and proceeded to explain the extra charge on his bill to the same cashier.
“I’ll just take this since I already paid for five, you know, and then we’ll be good,” says the customer. “But here’s where it gets weird. so [expletive] scans it. And he said, ‘Oh, that’s going to be $5.38.'”
However, the customer had already paid for the additional package. On TikTok, he expresses his frustration with the cashier who doesn’t understand.
“This kid just wasn’t getting it,” says the customer. “He’s looking at the bill. And he says, ‘I scanned four,’ and I say, ‘Dude, what are you talking about?’
The customer says the cashier kept insisting that he give him the discount, but the customer says that wasn’t the problem. The problem was the additional Mountain Dew package on the bill.
“I’m like, ‘No.’ [expletive]”, says the customer. “At this point. I’m just not trying to be polite. I said, ‘Believe and believe, my brother in Christ, I understand you gave me the discount. But you don’t understand that the discount is for four.’
He says another employee approached them to help, but she wasn’t understanding either.
“That’s how we solved it,” he says.
The customer left his phone and wallet on the counter and led the other Dollar General employee outside in his truck to show her how many packs of Mountain Dew he had: four.
Finally, he says, the employee understood and let him take the fifth package.
“Why in [expletive] it took so long for all this to happen?” he asks on TikTok. “So again, needless to say, I’m worried. Some people are straight [expletive] stupid.”
Dollar General’s new workers under fire
On TikTok, which has over 8,000 views, commenters write about shared experiences they’ve had with younger workers.
“I have a young 18-year-old colleague who can’t COUNT THE CHANGE,” commented one viewer.
“I paid in cash,” wrote another. “I had to fight the kid to give him the correct change. He insisted I give him a nickel when I gave him a quarter. I had to get out the quarters and nickels to compare.”
Several viewers commented in agreement with Dollar General customer speaking on TikTok.
“I agree with you 100 percent,” said another. “I never leave the store without checking my receipt. It must be the ‘new’ math being taught these days.”
“Dollar general is honestly going down so fast,” one viewer wrote.
However, others disagreed.
“You should have shown him the bill and said, ‘I only got four, but you charged me for five. I’m going to need a refund,'” someone commented. “You explained a lot.”
“So basically this was all your fault and you should have kept your mouth shut instead of telling the kid how to do his job.”
According to the Economic Policy Institute, about 84% of Dollar General employees earn less than $14 an hour.
