One reader is given hope that a Dreamcast 2 console might finally be a possibility, if Sega takes his suggestion for promoting its new games.
No matter how many great games and amazing consoles are released, we gamers can’t help but think about what was left. The sequel that never got made, the remaster that never happened (hello Bloodborne!), or the console they never had as a kid. For me that console is the Dreamcast 2 and the reason I never got it is… it doesn’t exist.
It came as a big shock to me at the time, but the Dreamcast was Sega’s last home console. Shortened in its prime by poor sales and outsold by the PlayStation 2, the Dreamcast was underfunded and doomed from the start. It’s still my favorite console of all time and while, yes, I admit a lot of that is down to nostalgia, I contend that it was the perfect blend of Sega’s arcade heritage with modern home console gaming.
The Dreamcast was also innovative, with the first proper Internet service and games like Phantasy Star Online that were years ahead of their time. Nowadays, though, Sega is a shell of its former self, better known for steamy PC strategy games than any of the classic franchises it’s associated with.
I’d agree with the new Sega though, admitting they’re not the company I remember and instead hoping for the odd indie style sequel like the excellent Streets Of Rage 4. Then, of course, they announced they were making a series of new games based on classic franchises like Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Streets Of Rage, and Shinobi.
Well, to be honest, they didn’t announce them so much as show some random footage, walk away and not explain anything. There have been rumors that they are reboots, remakes, free-to-play live service games, maybe all of the above… no one seems to know. There may even be two Jet Set radio games, according to recent rumors, so who knows what’s going on.
Either way, there are rumors of a dozen or more other games being revived, including OutRun, Altered Beast, After Burner, and Virtua Fighter, though I imagine that depends on how this first batch works out.
Their plans seem much bigger than you’d expect from modern Sega and there’s also talk of some kind of hub, maybe something like Assassin’s Creed Infinity is supposed to be, where you can access all the games and do achievements and such. But, and here’s my big idea… what if that hub was actually a piece of hardware? The Dreamcast 2 family.
Obviously, you wouldn’t want to force people to buy the console to play the new games, but I would love it if Sega made an official Dreamcast 2, with a new controller, specifically to run these games. You can even add an extra one or two as a bonus to the console purchase.
The problem is that it would probably be quite expensive, but my hope is that they can make streaming versions of the games and that the console will play them over the cloud, so it wouldn’t have to be powerful or expensive. Although Sega can certainly get away with charging die-hard fans a little.
That’s my idea anyway. It probably won’t happen, but at least we’ll probably get a controller. They can put a Dreamcast 2 logo on it at least, or call it the Dreamcast 2 hub, and then my dreams will at least partially come true.
