FromSoft games are extremely difficult. The first Elden ring had many areas and very difficult fights. But it seems that Shadow of the Erdtree may have broken a significant number of players, even long-time veterans.
I was actually quite surprised to see this, given that most players gave FromSoft some leeway, but Shadow of the Ertree’s reviews currently rank the game at “Mixed” on Steam, which is way up from ” Very Positive” by Elden Ring. the reason is that it is … very difficult.
Almost every negative review mentions the difficulty, with players complaining that their stats or level don’t protect them from 2-3 hits from early enemies. Some find it unfunny, others say it’s so bad they’re just ditching it altogether. Here is a small sample of the loads of these reviews:
- “The gameplay makes the game hard to recommend – spastic bosses with jerky movements and a bunch of physically nonsensical movements make the bosses in this DLC hard to deal with… As someone who beat all the games of Fromsoft with sharp Lvl1 characters for fun (including the base game), I will put an end to this.”
- “While the world design and colors are really nice and a lot of the enemy designs as well, there is a huge balancing issue, now even at 60 energy you get hit by almost every enemy that isn’t pure fodder.”
- “I really want to like this DLC, but those enemies and boss fights are the worst parts of the whole game. I’m really surprised, everyone who played and tested this approved of the golden hippo war.”
- “I was able to beat him, but the bosses were so frustrated and aggressive that even being almost maxed out with Scadutree shards didn’t make it any easier.”
With the latter, I absolutely do not believe that anyone has “maxed out” Scadutree Fragments 24 hours after release, but the general feeling is remarkably similar in almost all of these negative reviews (although some complain about performance).
I’m sorry, I can’t agree with that. I am NO a solid Souls player, and I was also hitting 2-3 when I started Erdtree, as were level 700 people. So it starts, and after 45+ hours, I’ve beaten every boss I previously thought was impossible . There’s a lot, a lot that goes into beating these tough fights, and I just think people aren’t taking the time to do it, since again, it’s barely been a day since the official launch. My recommendations:
- I absolutely do not believe that people have found all the Scadutree fragments and soul grace in the available areas within this short period of time. It’s the second day. This is largely what will make the difference even if you do, you will still take significant damage.
- Matching talismans to damage type is incredibly important here and may be the only thing that makes a fight tolerable, even more so than before.
- You may need to change your build. Just because you relied on certain moves or strategies in the base game doesn’t mean you can just brute force your way through things now. The same goes for spiritual grace, as some may be more valuable than others right now, and you’ll need to power them up considerably to be useful. Also be sure to take advantage of the sometimes hard-to-see NPC ally summons during bosses.
- Some bosses you don’t have to fight now. at all. There’s no reason to kill the infamous Blackgaol Knight now, no matter how close it is to the start. There is no reason to face the giant fire guy as he will 100% kill 99.99% of the players in a long time. Come on. Back. Later.
If you’re leaving Shadow of the Erdtree right now, that’s your right, but I just don’t think most of these people are being patient enough. I too wondered if I would be able to progress at all during the embargoed review period because of how difficult it was, but slowly, over time, I figured it out, got stronger, changed tactics, did it. And if I can, you can too, I believe in you.
